Why utilize native plants in landscapes?
- Best adapted to local climate
- Require less watering (once established)
- Require no fertilizing (once established)
- Are drought tolerant
- Are very attractive to native wildlife (birds, butterflies)
- Are low maintenance
While consideration should be given to using native plants in natural plantings, not every plant in a landscape needs to be native. Many non-native species have proven to be quite succesful (over native plants) over time. As long as there is no threat of a non-native plant becoming invasive, non-native plants may be considered.
